It Starts with a Sample Panel: Why Flexible Powder Coating Tests Matter in 2026

Aug 21, 2026

Three bags of powder are sitting on the laboratory bench, with several metal brackets waiting beside them. At this stage, the most important question is rarely how fast a full coating line can run.

The immediate questions are much simpler: Is the color right? Does the powder deposit evenly? How will the spray pattern change when the voltage or air output is adjusted? Is this finish worth taking to the next development stage?

Traditionally, even a palm-sized sample could require an air compressor, a separate control unit and several hoses. The actual spraying might take only a few minutes, while preparing and cleaning the equipment takes much longer.

New coating technology is making sample evaluation more relevant

The powder coating industry has seen several interesting developments in 2026.

In June, a laser-curing project involving PPG, IPG Photonics and Whirlpool received the 2026 IRI Excellence Award for Open Innovation. The project combines a pilot finishing line with a laboratory system to study powder formulations and component applications. Its goal is to shorten curing time, reduce wasted heat and improve production efficiency.

In March, WEG introduced a low-temperature-curing powder coating. The company reports a curing range of 110–140°C, compared with 160–200°C for conventional products. The development reflects the industry’s continued interest in lower energy consumption and more flexible coating applications.

These developments do not mean every workshop needs to replace its curing equipment immediately. They point to something more practical: as powder formulations, colors and curing methods become more diverse, manufacturers need convenient ways to evaluate them before committing production time and material.

A small test can reveal whether a powder deserves a larger trial.

A small coating test should not require a large setup

The LVBO BO‑VX24S cordless electrostatic powder coating gun is designed for this stage of the process.

Its air pump and lithium battery are built into the gun. Type‑C charging removes the need for a separate power unit, while the integrated air source eliminates the external compressor and air hose normally associated with powder spraying. Add powder, connect the integrated grounding cable and the gun is ready for a sample coating task.

Voltage can be adjusted from 10 to 50 kV, while relative air output can be set from 0 to 100. The transparent cup makes the remaining powder easy to see. A 150 ml cup is supplied as standard, with 250 ml and 500 ml options available on request.

At approximately 800 g, the gun is intended for sample panels, brackets, small hardware and localized touch-up work.

Consider a typical test day. In the morning, three blue powders need to be compared on metal panels. In the afternoon, a small fabricated bracket requires a localized repair. The operator can change powder, adjust voltage and airflow, observe deposition and record the result without building a complete production-scale spray system around every trial.

The purpose of a compact gun is not to replace an industrial coating line. Its value is to make early decisions faster and less cumbersome. It gives laboratories, powder suppliers, product developers and small workshops a practical way to prepare samples, compare colors and review initial coating behavior.

Portable equipment still requires a complete process

Convenience does not remove the essential process steps.

The grounding cable must be securely connected during electrostatic spraying. After application, the coated workpiece still needs to be cured according to the temperature and time specified by the powder supplier.

A sample panel can support an early comparison, but it does not replace formal process validation, film-thickness measurement, adhesion testing, corrosion testing or weathering evaluation.

One small panel will not answer every question. It can, however, expose an unsuitable color, powder or setting before more material and production capacity are committed.

That is where flexible sample-coating equipment earns its place: it turns an idea into something that can be sprayed, cured, examined and discussed.

For powder color development, sample preparation, small-part coating or localized touch-up work, send us your workpiece dimensions, powder type and testing objective. We can discuss the appropriate gun configuration, powder cup capacity and optional spray booth or curing oven.
